SCANNER:
SCANNER embark on a futuristic Power Metal journey through four decades

SCANNER embark on a futuristic Power Metal journey through four decades
A band, a half-android, and a story that began in the German Ruhr area in 1986 and still hasn’t reached its final chapter. SCANNER combine distinctive guitars, powerful vocals, and catchy melodies with a science-fiction universe that was remarkably consistent for its time in the late 1980s and has remained an integral part of their music ever since. Featured on the legendary “Doomsday News” compilation in 1987, the band made an international impact just one year later with “Hypertrace”. Alongside Helloween, Running Wild, and Kreator, they became part of an extraordinary generation of German Metal bands whose music conquered the world through Noise Records. What began as an unusual vision is now very much alive on stage. SCANNER continue to perform internationally, have already toured more than 20 countries, and are currently working on a new studio album.
In the late eighties, the journey through their own science-fiction universe gained momentum with the albums “Hypertrace” and “Terminal Earth”. Produced by Eloy vocalist Frank Bornemann, the debut “Hypertrace” was released through Noise Records in 1988. It remains the band’s best-selling album to this day and has since achieved cult status. Ralf Scheepers, now Primal Fear’s frontman, also contributed backing vocals. “Terminal Earth” followed a year later, continuing the story of the half-android Scanner before the band further developed its sound on the later albums “Mental Reservation”, “Scantropolis”, “The Judgement” and “Ball Of The Damned”, which were subsequently released through Massacre Records. The latter was released in 1997 and was followed by a European headline tour, shows with Fates Warning and Omen, and the band’s first appearance at Wacken Open Air. With the album “The Cosmic Race”, released through Rock Of Angels Records, a new chapter opened in 2024. Earth has become almost uninhabitable, natural disasters and military conflicts are increasing, and part of humanity sets out for a new planet. Yet even there, the old struggle for power, fear, and exclusion begins all over again. Musically, the album ranges from the driving “The Earth Song”, with its massive guitar work and anthemic chorus, to the initially almost ballad-like “A New Horizon”, which steadily builds in intensity and puts Efthimios Ioannidis and his powerful, versatile voice firmly in the spotlight. Tracks such as “Warriors Of Light” and “Space Battalion” reveal further facets of the album, which does not use its science-fiction narrative as mere decoration, but turns it into a world of its own through the music. The dark atmosphere of “The Cosmic Race” is also shaped by the real-world conflicts surrounding its creation. The Russian invasion of Ukraine began while the album was being written, and its impact is reflected in the album’s atmosphere and mood. What appears as a future scenario on “The Cosmic Race” remains closely linked to the present, and this very connection also shapes SCANNER’s path forward. Today, the band’s next chapter is carried by mastermind and guitarist Axel Julius, vocalist Efthimios Ioannidis, guitarist David Schnödewind, bassist Jörn Bettentrup, and drummer Sascha Kurpanek.
Four decades after their formation, SCANNER continue to move steadily forward. After the “Cosmic Envy Tour” through the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Spain in 2024, plus further shows in Spain and Italy the following year, the band remains internationally active. At the same time, the next chapter is taking shape with a new studio album in the works. More concerts and tours are being planned, sure to excite longtime fans and those yet to discover SCANNER. Whether on a festival stage or in a club, the Space Power Speed Metal pioneers from Gelsenkirchen deliver driving riffs and anthems that hit hard and create an electrifying atmosphere on stage. Seeing SCANNER live is not a nostalgic look back, but a band carrying its past into the future and drawing new energy from it for the next journey!
