Was geschieht, wenn ein Meteorit die Erde trifft und die Menschheit in Untote verwandelt? Mit ihrem neuen Konzeptalbum „Necropolis“ tauchen ATHORN in ihre eigene Geschichte rund um ein endzeitliches Wasteland mit Space-Western-Anleihen ab und beweisen, dass verschiedenste musikalische Einflüsse durchaus ein geniales Resultat erzeugen können. Um das Chaos zu beschreiben, das am Ende der Zivilisation herrscht, vereinen ATHORN alles zwischen progressivem Melodic Death und Power Metal in einem einzigen kreativen Schmelztiegel. Mit ihrem komplett in Eigenregie im Waveland Productions Studio von Sänger Carsten Frank produzierten Konzeptalbum sprengen die fünf Hannoveraner die Grenzen eingefahrener Genres und zeigen sowohl instrumentale Versiertheit als auch energiegeladene Professionalität. Schon ihr 2010 über AFM Records erschienenes Debüt „Phobia“ wurde sowohl von der Metal Presse als auch von Blind Guardians Mastermind Hansi Kürsch mit dem Zitat «Alle Achtung – das ist die volle Breitseite» gefeiert. Das zweite Album „Necropolis“ erscheint am 16.09.2016 über Dr. Music Records und wird für ähnliche Begeisterung sorgen.

ATHORN, gegründet 2008, sind hungrig und zeigen das auch: Die Gitarrenarbeit von Björn Spier und Tobias Liedke erinnert streckenweise an eine ideelle Weiterführung alter Sanctuary oder Nevermore, während Sänger Carsten Frank eine eingängige Melodie nach der Nächsten über die stets mitreißenden Grooves schallen lässt. Das prägnante, druckvolle Schlagzeugspiel von Philipp Horst und die präzisen Basslines von Matthias Brandt untermauern die abwechslungsreichen Songs dabei mit der nötigen Wucht. Das Intro zu „Another Day In Hell“ markiert schließlich den Anfang vom Ende. Stimmungsvoll bereiten Streicher und ein Nachrichtensprecher auf die Geschehnisse vor, bis eine Mundharmonika ganz im Stil von Ennio Morricone einsetzt und karge Landschaften vor dem inneren Auge erscheinen. Der Opener selbst prescht mit geballter Kraft nach vorne und melancholische Melodien beschreiben das aussichtslose Leben in einer apokalyptischen Welt, die sich zwischenzeitlich in brutalen Blastbeat-Attacken manifestiert. „The Dark Breed“ führt diesen Gedanken fort, hier sind die lebenden Toten auf dem Vormarsch und so begegnen einem groovig aggressive Parts, gepaart mit den für ATHORN typischen melodischen Einwürfen. Der abwechslungsreiche Gesang von Frontmann Carsten Frank zieht alle Register und könnte passender kaum sein: Hier gehen Verzweiflung und Wut Hand in Hand. Das nächste Highlight bildet das stampfende „Cabin On The Hill“, das von einem einsamen Krieger erzählt, dessen zerrüttete Gedanken ihn quälen; ist er der Auserwählte, die Welt zu retten und die Menschheit zu erlösen? „Born In Flames“ schlägt hingegen sanftere Töne an und beginnt mit einem einfühlsamen Akustik-Part, der von mehrstimmigen Gesang begleitet wird. Der Protagonist muss sich opfern, um der Welt eine neue Chance zu geben. Das abschließende „Of Pawns And Dragons“ begeistert mit düsterer Orchestrierung, in den finalen Momenten des höllischen Brachlandes entsteht etwas, das aus der Tragödie der Menschheit herauswächst und einen Neuanfang symbolisiert.

Der spektakuläre Kreativ-Overload in Form des hochwertig produzierten Musikvideos zur ersten Single „Another Day In Hell“, das praktisch die gesamte Geschichte des Albums in einem audiovisuellen Panorama zusammenfasst, bereitet dabei einen ersten Vorgeschmack auf die kommende Apokalypse. Mit diesem epochalen Clip, von Sänger und Regisseur Carsten Frank gekonnt in Szene gesetzt, haben ATHORN mal so richtig geklotzt und ein audiovisuelles Fass aufgemacht, das seinesgleichen in der Metal Szene sucht. Die Mischung aus spektakulären 3D-Animationen, einer Bandperformance vor einem flammenden Inferno und der spannenden Story, die wie eine Mischung aus The Walking Dead und Mad Max daherkommt, zündet direkt und lässt den Zuschauer gebannt vor dem Bildschirm mitfiebern. Die elf Songs des Longplayers bilden in Kombination mit dem stimmungsvollen Artwork, ebenfalls aus der Feder von Multitalent Carsten Frank, ein rundes Gesamtpaket. Davon kann man sich ab Mitte September selbst überzeugen, wenn „Necropolis“ im edel aufgemachten Digipak im Handel sowie in einer streng limitierten Special Edition in der Metallbox inklusive einiger Goodies, die es nur über die Bandwebsite und bei Konzerten geben wird, erscheint.

With their new concept album “Necropolis“, ATHORN dive right into their own story, revolving around a doomsday-like wasteland with space western references and prove that different musical influences can in fact be combined into one brilliant end result. In order to describe the chaos that ensues at the end of the era of civilization, ATHORN throw every style between progressive Melodic Death and Power Metal into one creative melting pot. With their autonomously written and produced concept album, which was recorded in vocalist Carsten Frank‘s Waveland Productions Studio, the five Germans break the limits of the established genres and showcase their instrumental skills as well as their energized professionalism. Even their 2010 debut “Phobia“, released through AFM Records, was celebrated by the metal press as well as Blind Guardian‘s mastermind Hansi Kürsch with the statement «Well done! Full of atmosphere, string players and a newscaster prepare for the following events, until a harmonica in the style of Ennio Morricone kicks in, creating pictures of a bleak landscape in front of your inner eye. The opener itself rushes ahead with full force and the melancholic melodies give a description of the desperate life in the apocalyptic world, which temporarily manifests in brutal blast beat attacks. “The Dark Breed“ continues this idea, with the living dead on the rise, and so one encounters groovy aggressive parts combined with ATHORN’s typically melodic interjections. The diverse vocals of frontman Carsten Frank pull out all the stops and couldn’t be more fitting: here, despair and anger are going hand in hand. The next highlight is the stomping “Cabin On The Hill“ that tells about a lonely warrior whose shattered thoughts are torturing him; is he the chosen one to save the world and free mankind? “Born In Flames“ however strikes some softer tones and begins with a gentle acoustic part accompanied by polyphonic vocals. The protagonist has to sacrifice himself in order to give the world a new chance. Finally, “Of Pawns And Dragons“ fascinates with its gloomy orchestration and in the final moments of the infernal wasteland, something new arises from the tragedy of mankind, symbolizing a new beginning.

The spectacular creative overload is presented in the form of a well-produced high-quality music video for the first single “Another Day In Hell“, which practically summarizes the entire story of the album in an audiovisual panorama and provides a first glimpse at the approaching apocalypse. With this epochal clip, skillfully arranged by vocalist and director Carsten Frank, ATHORN have every right to brag and thereby open up a box that is still looking for its equals within the Metal scene. The mix of spectacular 3D animations, the band’s performance in front of a burning inferno and the thrilling storyline that could be a crossover of The Walking Dead and Mad Max, ignites the flames instantly and leaves the viewer’s eyes glued to the screen. The longplayer’s eleven songs combined with the atmospheric artwork, also created by all-rounder Carsten Frank, result in a well-balanced overall package. Starting in mid-September, you can see it for yourself because that’s when “Necropolis“ will be released as a sophisticated digipak in stores as well as a super limited special edition metal box including various goodies, which will only be available through the band’s website or at live shows.
