ACCESS:ICARUS errichten mit stylischem Glamour emotional berührende Rock „Monuments“

Die Hamburger ACCESS:ICARUS stehen für ausgefeilten, mitreißenden Stadionrock mit internationaler Ausrichtung, einer gehörigen Dosis Glamour und einem bombastischen Soundgewand à la Coldplay, Muse oder The Killers. Dabei beherrscht die Band mit ihrer hymnischen und den Zeitgeist treffenden Musik sowohl die große Geste als auch die leisen, emotional berührenden Töne, ohne dabei jemals selbst abgehoben oder beliebig zu wirken. Der Sound ihres von Chris Harms (Lord Of The Lost, KMFDM, Night Laser) und Benjamin Lawrenz (Saga, Koiné, Tommy Iommi) produzierten Debüts „Monuments“, das am 19.10.2018 über recordJet erscheint, kann sowohl Umarmung, Durchhalteparole oder auch Schlachtruf sein, ist aber immer einladend, publikumsnah, begeisternd und zutiefst menschlich.

Schon zu Beginn setzten ACCESS:ICARUS auf eigenständiges Songwriting orientiert an internationalen Rockgrößen, was 2009 in der Gründung des ursprünglichen Anthology Projektes mündete, in dem sich auch die heutige Konstellation der Band, bestehend aus Benedikt Fleischer (Gesang, Keyboard), Robert Wendel (Bass, Gesang, Synth) und Janosch Dolber (Gitarre, Gesang, Keyboard), kennenlernte. Mit ihrem Song „Icarus“ entdeckten die Musiker die großen Hall-Räume für sich, fokussierten sich auf eingängige Gitarrenmelodien und poppige Hooks, eingebettet in breite Klangteppiche und verbanden große Gefühle und intime Momente mit erzählerischem Pathos und markantem Falsettgesang. Der daraus folgende Namenswechsel gilt auch als der Startschuss für die professionelle Zielsetzung der drei Künstler. In Zusammenarbeit mit Madsen Sänger Sebastian Madsen entstand 2014 die erste EP „The Prolog“, die dank des gewonnenen Bandcontests der Jugendmesse YOU! in Berlin über recordJet (Milky Chance, Alice Merton, Heisskalt) veröffentlicht wurde. Der wachsende Erfolg lässt sich auch bei den zahlreichen bundesweiten Open Air Gigs an der stetig steigenden Zahl begeisterter Fans ablesen. Produzent und Lord Of The Lost Frontmann Chris Harms kam ein Jahr später auf die Band zu und fungierte beim Songwriting als Mentor, um dann gemeinsam mit Benjamin Lawrenz in den international etablierten Chameleon Studios (Udo Lindenberg, Tina Turner, Callejon) in Hamburg das Debütalbum zu produzieren. Herausgekommen ist mit „Monuments“, ein 13-Track starker Longplayer, der seine Songs thematisch unter einigen großen Fragen vereint, über die die Musiker in den vier Jahren zuvor erwachsen geworden sind. Wofür will ich stehen in meinem Leben? Was sind meine Ziele, Träume, was berührt mich und wen möchte ich in meinem Leben bewegen – oder im Hinblick auf den Titel des Albums – an welchen Monumenten möchte ich bauen? Allgemein gültige Antworten auf diese großen Fragen im Leben vieler junger Erwachsener geben die Songs nicht. Jedoch beleuchten sie die Thematik aus verschiedenen Perspektiven und Facetten. Vom erhabenen und aufbrausenden „Eye Of The Storm“, das die Winde der Veränderung als einen überwältigenden Sturm skizziert und zu dem es bereits ein eindrucksvolles Lyricvideo gibt, über das schicksalhafte „Faceless“ mit Ohrwurmgarantie zum kämpferischen „Empires“ oder das fröhlich jagende „Sunshine“, bis hin zur sehr intimen und verletzlichen Ballade „Golden Threads“, die sich mit Ausstiegsgedanken und Depression auseinandersetzt, deckt „Monuments“ eine große musikalische Bandbreite an Emotionen ab. Das Album liefert dazu auch das tanzbare, leicht melancholische „Bittersweet“, das sich in eine pulsierend, treibende Ode an die Einsamkeit des Dancefloors verwandelt. Doch auch das warme hoffnungsvolle „Orange“ trägt genauso zur Stimmungsvielfalt bei, wie das dramatische „Sleep“, welches von der Angst vor der eigenen Vergänglichkeit handelt und das in den letzten Minuten ein episches musikalisches Feuerwerk abbrennt.

Bei einem so anspruchsvollen Album wie „Monuments“ mit einem dermaßen opulenten Sound war ACCESS:ICARUS schon früh klar, dass neben der Musik eben auch großer Wert auf die passende Optik Wert gelegt werden muss. Bei ihrer Bühnenperformance leben sie ihren Hang zu extravaganten, stylischen und exzentrischen Outfits aus, der ihnen bisher mit viel Glitzer, Strass und Konfettikanonen nicht nur seitens der LGBTIQ-Szene viel Aufmerksamkeit einbrachte. So überlassen sie auch beim Album nichts dem Zufall und stellen sich der vorherrschenden Uniformität der deutschen Pop und Rock Landschaft demonstrativ entgegen. Nun haben wir 2018 und ACCESS:ICARUS sind bereit zum Abheben. Für das Trio galt schon immer: Nicht ‘style over substance‘, sondern tiefsinniger Inhalt in stylischer Form!

The Hamburg based ACCESS:ICARUS stand for sophisticated, rousing stadium Rock with an international focus, a proper dose of glamour and a bombastic sound à la Coldplay, Muse or The Killers. With their anthemic and the up-to-date music, the band masters both, the grand gesture as well as the quiet, emotionally touching tones, without ever appearing to be out of touch or acting arbitrarily. The sound of their debut “Monuments”, produced by Chris Harms (Lord Of The Lost, KMFDM, Night Laser) and Benjamin Lawrenz (Saga, Koiné, Tommy Iommi), which will be released on October 19th, 2018, through recordJet, can be an embrace, call for perseverance or battle cry but is always inviting, audience-oriented, delightful and deeply human.

Right from the beginning, ACCESS:ICARUS focused on independent songwriting, oriented to international Rock icons which led to the founding of the original Anthology project in 2009, in which also today’s constellation of the band, consisting of Benedikt Fleischer (vocals, keyboard), Robert Wendel (bass, vocals, synth) and Janosch Dolber (guitar, vocals, keyboard), got to know each other. With their song “Icarus”, the musicians discovered the big hall rooms for themselves, focused on catchy guitar melodies and Pop hooks, embedded in broad soundscapes and combined great feelings and intimate moments with narrative pathos and distinctive falsetto vocals. The resulting change of name is also the starting signal for the professional goals of the three artists. In cooperation with Madsen singer Sebastian Madsen, the first EP “The Prolog” was produced in 2014 thanks to the won band contest of the youth fair YOU! in Berlin and had been released through recordJet (Milky Chance, Alice Merton, Heisskalt). The growing success can also be seen at the numerous nationwide open-air gigs and the steadily increasing number of enthusiastic fans. Producer and Lord Of The Lost frontman Chris Harms came up to the band one year later and acted as a mentor for the songwriting, before producing the debut album together with Benjamin Lawrenz in the internationally established Chameleon Studios (Udo Lindenberg, Tina Turner, Callejon) in Hamburg. The result is “Monuments”, a 13-track strong long-player, that unites its songs thematically under some big questions, on which the musicians grew up in the previous four years. What do I want to represent in my life? What are my aims, dreams, what touches me and who do I want to move in my life – or with regard to the title of the album – on which monuments do I want to build? The songs don’t give universal answers to these big questions in the lives of many young adults. However, they enlight the topic from different perspectives and facets. From the exalted and irascible “Eye Of The Storm”, which outlines the winds of change as an overwhelming storm and which already has an impressive lyric video, to the fateful “Faceless” with catchy tunes that stuck in your head, to the combative “Empires” or the cheerfully hunting “Sunshine”, up to the very intimate and vulnerable ballad “Golden Threads”, which deals with thoughts of exit and depression, “Monuments” covers a wide musical spectrum of emotions. The album also provides the danceable, slightly melancholic “Bittersweet”, which turns into a pulsating, driving ode to the loneliness of the dance floor. But the warm, hopeful “Orange” also contributes to the variety of moods, as does the dramatic “Sleep” which deals with the fear of one’s own evanescence and that burns down an epic musical firework in its last minutes.

With an album as ambitious as “Monuments” and such an opulent sound, ACCESS:ICARUS knew early on that besides the music, great emphasis must also be attached on the right visual appearance. In their stage performance, they live out their penchant for extravagant, stylish and eccentric outfits, which has so far attracted a lot of attention with glitter, rhinestones and confetti cannons not only from the LGBTIQ scene. They leave nothing to chance with the album and demonstratively oppose the prevailing uniformity of the German Pop and Rock scene. Now we have 2018, and ACCESS:ICARUS are ready to take off. For the trio, it has always been: No ‘style over substance‘, but profound content in stylish shape!
